![]() And the energy requirements would likely require, if not a Dyson sphere, then a "ringworld" at least, in which case why do we care about Mars so much?Īnd because of that, it seems like it is vastly more feasible, easier, and cheaper to simply live on Mars in domes and other underground habitations, and to perhaps biologically/technologically augment our own bodies (e.g. Likely it would be a centuries- or millennia-long project, if not longer (some estimates of some schemes I've heard suggest on the order of 100,000 years !). We're talking likely millions of teragrams of material here (for comparison, Earth's atmosphere has a mass of around 5.15 billion Tg), which is stupendously more than any rocket can launch and would be serious work even if we could, say, try to harvest a bunch of comets for it (not to mention doing that, itself, is extremely difficult). As far as I can tell, any scheme to do this would have to be both massively expensive and massively long-term: for one thing, you need to add a lot of mass to Mars' atmosphere, ideally in the form of nitrogen and oxygen, and you won't get that so easily. I wonder about this, because it seems to so often come up. We have a discord server at, feel free to join.
